The WTA Elite Trophy, a new tennis event, will be held this November in Hengqin, a new area of the city of Zhuhai in south China. Several of the world's top players, including Venus Williams and Dominika Cibulkova, are expected to compete in the match, which will be held from Nov. 2 to Nov. 8.

Construction of the event's main facility, Zhuhai Hengqin International Tennis Center, will be completed in September before accommodating a test match in October.

WTA Chairman and CEO Stacey Allaster said the WTA Elite Trophy was a "brand new" top event designed for Zhuhai, and it was meant to be "the only and special one." Allaster suggested that the new facilities may be used for other purposes during non-match days, such as the training of young players and amateurs. Apart from this, Allaster said, the new venue could also be used to host musical events and other sports competitions in a bid to raise the facility's efficiency.

The new tennis center – which has around 117,000 square meters of floor space – is located at the center of the Hengqin New Area. The whole facility will include one 5,000-seat central court, one 1,500-seat court and four 250-seat courts, in addition to 12 outdoor training courts. A 12,000-seat stadium will be built along with other accommodating facilities in the later second phase of the project.
